What are the functions of the minor characters in Pride and Prejudice? (Wickham, the sisters, etc)?

In thinking about the functions of the "minor" characters, like Wickham, the younger 3 Bennet sisters, Lady Catherine, etc., what are they doing there? Why are they necessary? What would be lacking if one of them was not in the novel?
